Detroit, Michigan native and Deaf high school student Khyiana Tate is Charles Collectibles and Books’ newest featured author! Her first picture book is titled Signing With Khy. Khyiana is the first author to create an American Sign Language book designed for African American Deaf and Hard of Hearing students. The book features pictures of herself, family and friends signing the alphabet in ASL. Khyiana created the book because she didn’t see herself and other African American Deaf students represented in her school materials. Her goal is to create a series of books designed for and about African American representation in ASL books. Khyiana hopes to inspire others to follow their dreams. Her dream is to publish a book series, to own her own hair salon, and to continue teaching sign language to the hearing community.
